SolarCity Company Information

  • CEO: Lyndon R. Rive
  • Founded: 2006
  • Stock Symbol: SCTY
  • Headquarters: San Mateo, CA

Founded in 2006, SolarCity has grown to serve people, families, businesses and government entities in 18 states plus the Washington, DC area. Their continued growth is due in large part to both a quality product and also expert installation and customer service. SolarCity builds systems for homes, businesses of all sizes, schools and government properties.

SolarCity Solar Plans – Solar PPA and Solar Lease

Both personal and business use systems are eligible for two types of financing: Solar PPA and Solar Lease. Solar PPA allows the customer to pay for the exact amount of energy produced through the installed system, which is “hosted” for an agreed upon term. The Solar Lease is also a hosted program, but allows the consumer to pay a fixed monthly amount, rather than the actual amount of energy produced. Neither plan requires a down payment to get started.

Installation Process with SolarCity

For residential systems, installation takes one day to complete. Representatives create a custom solar power system for each client using photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on the roof of the house. They offer a home protection guarantee against any damage to the roof or home occurring during installation. They also assist the customer in transferring the solar contract to the new owners if the house is sold.

For commercial systems, a comprehensive site audit is conducted to determine the business’s energy needs. Then, a customized system is designed. The customer reviews the plans, obtains building permits and approves the plan. Installation times vary based on the size of the system. After final inspection, utilities are connected and the system is operational. Ongoing monitoring, maintenance and support are included services.

SolarCity App Technology – MySolarCity

SolarCity also stays on top of the latest technologies to keep customers connected. The MySolarCity app allows customers to connect with others in the solar city community, monitors power usage and provides information to make decisions to further save on energy costs. PowerGuide shows energy use and cost in real time and also charts usage over time. Divided into day, month, year and lifetime, users can see the impact the SolarCity system has had.
